Foods Toxic to Whippets: What Your Dog Should Never Eat
Understanding which foods are toxic to Whippets is an important part of overall Whippet care. While some foods cause mild stomach upset, others can be life-threatening even in small amounts.
Below is a comprehensive guide to foods that are dangerous, foods to monitor, and foods to avoid feeding regularly.
Foods Toxic to Whippets (Emergency Foods to Avoid)
FOOD- POISON, OOPS, AND YOU SHOULD CONSIDER NOT FEEDING IT!!
Three categories that you MUST pay attention to when it comes to food.
The following foods require immediate veterinary attention if ingested.
Many everyday items may seem harmless but are actually foods toxic to Whippets and should always be avoided.
ANY of the following foods will need vet intervention…NOT joking.
- Fish Bones and Cooked chicken bones– These bones will splinter and tear the dogs internal organs.
- Human Vitamin Supplements Containing Iron – Can damage the lining of the digestive system and be toxic to the other organs including liver and kidneys.
- Macadamia Nuts – Can cause weakness, muscle tremors and paralysis. Symptoms are usually temporary, but not always.
- Marijuana – Can depress the nervous system, cause vomiting and changes the heart rate…changing heart rate for whippets can cause death.
- Moldy or spoiled food – Contain multiple toxins causing vomiting and diarrhea.
- Wild Mushrooms – Can cause abdominal pain, drooling, liver damage, kidney damage, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma or death ( I’m referring to the ones that humans can’t eat either)
- Nutmeg – Can cause tremors, seizures, and death.
- Pennies – made from the 1980’s to today. Contain zinc, which can cause kidney failure and damage to the red blood cells. A dog that consumes even 1 penny can become sick and even die, if the penny is not removed.
- Tobacco – Contains nicotine, which affects to the digestive and nervous system. Can result in rapid heartbeat, collapse, coma, and death.
- Walnuts – they are poisonous to dogs.
- Xylitol – Diet products containing the sweetener Xylitol can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar resulting in depression, loss of coordination, seizures, and death.
- Yeast Dough – Can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.
- Garlic (raw, cooked, powdered) – Damages red blood cells and can cause anemia (same family as onions, but often overlooked)
- Avocado (especially pit/skin) – Contains persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea
- Artificial Sweeteners (general) – You already have Xylitol (great), but adding broader wording helps SEO
Foods Toxic to Whippets in Larger Amounts
These foods can be harmful depending on the amount consumed. Monitor your dog closely and contact your vet if symptoms appear.
DON’T PANIC, but watch carefully!!!
- Grapes & Raisins – Can cause kidney failure in dogs. If the dog doesn’t eat enough at one time to be fatal, he can be severely damaged by eating just a few grapes or raisins regularly.
- Alcoholic beverages – Can cause intoxication, coma, and death.
- Caffeine – Stimulates the central nervous and cardiac systems, and can cause vomiting, restlessness, heart palpitation, and even death within hours.
- Chocolate – Can cause seizures, come and death. Bakers chocolate is the most dangerous. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous is it. But any chocolate, in large enough amounts, can kill a dog. An ounce of chocolate can poison a 30-pound dog, and many dogs will happily consume more than this. The symptoms may not show up for several hours with death following twenty-four hours.
- Citrus Oil Extracts – Can cause vomiting.
- Fruit pits, seeds – apple seeds, cherry pits, and peach pits, pear pits, plum pits, peaches, and apricot pits contain cyanide, which is poisonous. Dogs have eaten these pits before and been fine, we think it’s a matter of how much they eat.
- Onions (raw, cooked, or powder) – Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia.
- Fat Trimmings – Can lead to pancreatitis
- Cooked Bones (general) – You mentioned chicken—expand slightly for clarity/search
Foods to Avoid Feeding Regularly
These foods are not immediately toxic but can cause long-term health issues if fed regularly.
These are things that people give their dogs intentionally but are not recommended. Will not hurt them if given occasionally but can cause long term effects.
- Cat food – Too high in protein and fats.
- Egg Whites (raw) – contain a protein called avidin, which can deplete your dog of biotin, one the B vitamins.
- Dairy Products – Can cause pancreatitis, gas, and diarrhea.
- Ham & Bacon – Contain too much fat and too much salt and can cause pancreatitis.
- Liver – Too much liver (several servings a week) can lead to vitamin A toxicity. This can affect muscles and cause deformed bones, excessive bone growth on the elbows and spine, weight loss, and anorexia.
- Raw Fish – fed regularly, can result in a thiamine ( a B vitamin) deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death.
- Salt – If eaten in large quantities it may lead to electrolyte imbalances and kidney problems.
- Sugary Foods – Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus.
- Turley and Duck – Extremely high in fat and can cause pancreatitis. Go easy on the holiday leftovers, especially the fatty parts.
- Table Scraps (general) – Helps capture broader search intent
- Processed Foods (chips, fast food, etc.) – salt/fat overload
Chews & Treat Safety
Rawhide chewies have been said to cause some dogs to choke and have caused intestinal blockages in others. It depends on whether your dog devours them of just nibbles on them. I think a more common problem would be the dog wolf’s them down and then throws them up. We don’t use them here, it’s not worth intestinal issues to me. Vets generally recommend against them.
Pig ears are every dogs favorite but should be given sparingly. They are high in fat and have been implicated in pancreatitis in some dogs.
